The collection documents Frank Klement's research on a variety of Civil War-related topics, including Abraham Lincoln, the Copperheads, secret political societies, and the role of WIsconsin in the war. Includes correspondence and notes related to his research projects as well as drafts of his articles and books. Also contains Klement's notes for public talks on Civil War topics and course lectures at Marquette University; notes from courses on the Civil War that Klement took as an undergraduate; and a limted number of Wisconsin high school and college yearbooks.

Clement Laird Vallandigham was born July 29, 1820, in New Lisbon, Ohio (now Lisbon, Ohio), to Clement and Rebecca Laird Vallandigham. His father, a Presbyterian minister, educated his son at home. In 1841, Vallandigham had a dispute with the college president at Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. He was honorably dismissed, but he never received a degree. Edwin M. Stanton, the future Secretary of War under President Lincoln, was Vallandigham's close friend before the Civil War....
